Cindy Prascik's Review of Reminiscence, Woodstock 99 & Beckett



My dear reader(s), this weekend I had the opportunity to catch a triple feature without ever leaving home...a state of affairs that is as troubling as it is comforting. First on my agenda: Reminiscence.

A machine that allows people to relive their memories leads its operator to obsession.

With its fantastical premise and its core cast of Hugh Jackman, Thandiwe Newton, and Rebecca Ferguson, Reminiscence is the kind of movie I used to love seeing on the big screen. Sadly, hokey twists, broadly-drawn characters, and wooden performances make this one a real drag. The narration sets an awkward tone from the outset, and there's a weird undercurrent of climate-change warning that — no matter how essential — is a poor fit. The pace does pick up somewhat about the midway point, Ramin Djawadi's score is pretty nifty, and an unintentional (I guess?) homage to the great 80s comedy Top Secret! is actually quite funny, but there's just no saving this one.

Reminiscence clocks in at 116 minutes and is rated PG13 for "strong violence, drug material throughout, sexual content, and some strong language."

Reminiscence is a memory you won't care to revisit. Of a possible nine Weasleys, Reminiscence gets three.

Reminiscence is now playing in theaters worldwide, and streaming on HBO Max through mid-September.

Next on the docket: Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage.

A documentary showcasing the dark side of the third Woodstock festival.

Woodstock 99, the concert, booked talent that clearly indicated it wasn't aiming for the mellow hippie vibe of its predecessors. Woodstock 99, the film, wants you to believe only one outcome ever was possible, and it doesn't mind throwing a little shade at Woodstock 69 and Woodstock 94 along the way. Horror stories abound: Rioting, sexual assaults, even deaths. Attendees are generalized as angry white fratboys, and organizers come across as woefully out of touch. A testosterone-fueled lineup, featuring acts such as Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, and Limp Bizkit, is rightfully painted as aggressive, with the only three women on the bill — Jewel, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette — portrayed as all sunshine and lollipops. Morissette, in particular, writes some pretty angry music, but here she's featured simpering her way through the idiotic "Ironic." While there's no denying some very bad things happened at this festival — some due to poor planning and others due to uncontrollable factors like the weather — I daresay there are thousands who enjoyed themselves and remember the event fondly. This film is interested only in tales of terror.

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage runs 110 minutes and is rated TVMA for pervasive language, nudity, violence, and alcohol and drug use.

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage is a riveting watch, even if it presents just half the story. Of a possible nine Weasleys, Woodstock 99 gets seven.

The final picture on my weekend agenda was Beckett.

Following a deadly car crash, an American tourist in Greece finds himself on the run from dangerous and powerful people.

Beckett is one of those films that probably seemed like a good idea on paper, but the execution is so poor it's hard to imagine anyone ever thought so. This movie is so slow and dull it almost stopped me calling Reminiscence slow and dull. The plot is both jumbled and eye-rollingly predictable, with its sole constant being, "How much can we physically abuse our lead?" John David Washington and Alicia Vikander are the most annoying on-screen couple in recent memory. They're among the top actors of their generation, but they've got zero chemistry and they've phoned it in here. Someone, somewhere, determined it wasn't necessary to caption the Greek dialogue, but there's enough that it's a little too easy to zone out a little too often. Mostly, though, poorly written characters and bland performances make it impossible to invest in anyone. The end seems a long time coming, and by the time you get there, you won't care what happens to any of them.

Beckett clocks in at 110 minutes (feels like about six hours) and is rated TVMA for moderate violence, profanity, and frightening/intense scenes. And because I haven't written anything nearly this funny, here's my favorite user-posted content warning from IMDB, totally more entertaining than the film itself: "Film starts off with a prolonged sex scene with limited thrusting." Kindly beware the "limited thrusting."

I desperately wanted to like Beckett. I didn't. Of a possible nine Weasleys, Beckett gets two.

Beckett is now streaming on Netflix.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE GREEN KNIGHT

Review:

David Lowery’s deconstructed Arthurian tale is a methodical pensive take that’s moody and visually stunning.  Lowery’s film isn’t going to be for everyone since his pacing is deliberately slow as he lets visual and moments linger on screen for an extended amount of time.  Everything moves at a slow simmer allowing the thematic meaning to seep into your mind.  It’s the opposite of a blockbuster film since it asks you actively digest what’s being presented on screen. Dev Patel leads the film ably in a understated but thoughtful turn as Sir Gawain as he tackles destiny and life during his journey. Patel’s dialogue is sparse but he communicates a books worth of emotions via his eyes.  The supporting cast is equally effective with Alicia Vikander making the biggest impression in a duel role one of which leaves her nearly unrecognizable. David Lowery’s film fits nicely next to John Boorman’s classic Excalibur and much like that film it’s a visual feast that will leave you thinking about it long after the film is over.

MOVIE REVIEW: TOMB RAIDER








































Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination -- a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn't be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.

Review:

The rebooted Tomb Raider is a solid if paint by the numbers origin story which also makes it one of the better video game adaptations.  Of course that’s hardly high praise since video game adaptations have a fairly terrible track record.  Luckily Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, who directed the impressive 2015 Norwegian disaster film The Wave, gives his film a palpable plus even if the script is fairly basic.  Uthaug delivers some solid action set pieces throughout along with a shipwreck sequence which could serve as a solid test for epilepsy.  Uthaug film feels strangely like a 90’s Michael Bay film if you removed all of Bay’s bombast.  It’s an interesting bit of alchemy that works more often than not.   

Tomb Raider wouldn’t work at all if Alicia Vikander couldn’t pull off the role of Laura Croft which she did incredibly well. For the uninitiated, the video game character was rebooted in 2013 as a younger, more grounded take which serves as the basis for this film. So all the cartoonish proportions of the video game and caricature of Angelina Jolie’s 2001 portrayal are thrown by the wayside for a more realistic and grounded approach which works in the film’s favor.   

Vikander is fully committed to the character and she’s clearly enjoying herself as the heroine.  She pulls off a steady balance of strength while still being green and learning her way.  Outside of her childlike grunts, Vikander is always the best thing on the screen and gives the film its heart.  

The supporting cast though is sadly underused and developed.  Walton Goggins is given one of the most basic villain characters to play which is a shame since Goggins is such an interesting actor.  It’s a fairly large misstep mainly due to the script which doesn’t provide any depth.  Daniel Wu’s character is the very definition of a one dimensional character, sure he does some things during the film but he’s more a function than a full-fledged character.  Dominic West also isn’t given much to do outside of a wear a terrible wig and look slightly confused and nuts.  

Tomb Raider is a perfectly watchable film and fans of the video game series will enjoy seeing certain sequences from the 2013 game lifted and woven into this film’s narrative but it all feels incredibly safe.  The door is left wide open for a sequel should this film prove to be successful, which with Alicia Vikander in the lead isn’t a bad thing.

MOVIE REVIEW: JASON BOURNE







































Matt Damon reprises his role as the titular former CIA agent with a hazy past. Jason Bourne is the fifth installment in the action franchise, and the third to be directed by Paul Greengrass. ~ Daniel Gelb, Rovi

Review:

Jason Bourne marks the welcome return of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass to the Bourne franchise.  The results are mostly good with only a few hiccups here and there, mostly script wise.  Matt Damon easily slips back into Bourne’s skin with solid results.  Damon has always given Bourne a tortured quality which is rare in the spy genre and one of the things that makes the franchise so interesting.  There are plenty of new faces in this entry with one lone returning cast member being cast off after setting the plot in motion.  Tommy Lee Jones, at his most scowly, serves as the big bad this go around and he’s serviceable even though his character is slightly underwritten.  Vincent Cassel suffers a similar fate the assassin on Bourne’s trail throughout the film which is a shame because it’s a waste of a fine actor.  Alicia Vikander, who you can tell is serious because her hair is pinned up throughout, does the best she can with the character she’s given.  A late act turn is fairly interesting but would have made for a more interesting plot line had it been explored throughout the movie.  The biggest issue with Jason Bourne isn’t that it’s a bad movie, far from it, its that it feels very familiar, following familiar beats we’ve followed through most Bourne films.  Still, Greengrass delivers some fantastic sequences especially the logistically impressive Greek riot sequence and collateral damage excess of the final act’s Vegas sequence.  The hand to hand fight to top off the film is probably one of the brutal fights I’ve seen in recent memory.  Jason Bourne adds up to a solid film even though it’ll leave you wishing there was a bit more innovation.

Dearest Blog: Yesterday I took a pass on the company picnic (Outdoors? In July? Are they kidding?) to head up to Marquee Cinemas and catch up with Jason Bourne. 
Spoiler level here will be mostly mild, nothing plot-specific, but I do offer an opinion at the end that some might consider slightly spoilerish. If you're worried, read after you've seen it, please! 
Jason Bourne is back with a vengeance, looking for answers and on the run for his life. 
Ahhhhhhh...dear Reader(s)...remember the good not-so-old days when Jeremy Renner appeared poised to take the reins of both the Bourne and Mission Impossible franchises? 
Fast forward a few years, a pair of Hollywood A-Listers decide to hang onto their cash cows, and Renner is again relegated to being the Avengers' Katniss Everdeen. (But at least he got a backstory, am I right??) 
There's nothing wrong with Matt Damon, of course, but you may count me among the silent minority that would have enjoyed this picture a lot more with Renner at the fore. 
Jason Bourne kicks off with a chase scene that outlasts even that one from Jupiter Ascending that put me to sleep three times and was still rolling when I woke up. I mean, this thing GOES ON. The sequence includes some pivotal moments, but it also highlights one of the movie's key weaknesses right out of the gate: too much filler. 
Jason Bourne has more running than a Ten-era Doctor Who episode and enough vehicular carnage for a Transformers movie; had filmmakers exercised even a bit of restraint, they'd have had a far better end product. Much of the action is filmed in up-close-and-personal fashion. 
The fight scenes are brutal and well executed, but the wiggly camera work is enough to trigger a seizure. It's a passable tactic when used wisely, but, here, again, there's just too much of it. Damon is appropriately grim in the lead, his sour expression a constant reminder of the Very Serious Situation at hand. 
Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is a disaster, bringing all the dimension of a paper doll to her important role, while struggling mightily to hang onto the same accent for any two consecutive scenes. The rest of the supporting cast is unremarkable, but fine for what's asked of them. 
The story is no more or less convoluted than any other installment in the series, sure to leave questions if (like me) you've mostly forgotten the earlier films, but not so deep that any fan of action flicks couldn't enjoy it even if he'd never seen a Bourne movie before. 
Finally, as if Jason Bourne weren't enough of a jumble, three-quarters of it feels very much like an ending, but the last act does a complete about-face and clearly sets the stage for more. Jason Bourne clocks in at an excessive 123 minutes and is rated PG13 for "intense sequences of violence and action, and brief strong language." 
Boasting action a-plenty and a solid cast that deserves better, Jason Bourne is, unfortunately, a bit of a snooze. 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, Jason Bourne gets four.

Cindy Prascik''s Reviews of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mr. Holmes



Dearest Blog: today it was off to the pictures for a pair of highly-anticipated (at least by me) titles: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mr. Holmes.

Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.

First up: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

An American C.I.A. agent and a Russian K.G.B. agent reluctantly team up to keep a nuclear bomb out of dangerous hands.

Ladies and gents, it will surprise exactly no one when I say I know nothing about the original Man from U.N.C.L.E. TV series, aside from the fact it's where Ducky from NCIS got his start. If you're looking for comparisons between this big-screen outing and its small-screen ancestor, I fear you'll have to look elsewhere.

On its own merits, the big-screen Man from U.N.C.L.E. feels like it can't quite decide what it wants to be. It's amusing, but not nearly funny enough to be called a comedy. It's a little too silly to sell its attempts at drama. There's some nice action, but none of the big stunts we've come to expect from great action pieces. In other words, it's a lot of "what might have been."

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are as good-looking a pair of guys as you'll find anywhere, perhaps cinema's most dashing double-leads since Newman and Redford. Unfortunately, Cavill has all the charisma of a used lunch bag, and Hammer (whom I adore, for the record) has been shoved into a role that never seems to fit. They have a few genuinely good moments together, but overall it seems a waste of two capable leading men.

Female lead Alicia Vikander is absolutely stunning and absolutely unremarkable in every other way. It's only when Hugh Grant turns up you feel like you've got someone who knows what to do with a feature film. As mentioned, the action is good fun at times, but nothing very exciting or new. There's espionage and double-crosses and triple-crosses and none of it is ever much of a surprise. Some of the locations are almost as pretty as Cavill and Hammer, but if I had to name the one thing I actually really, really loved about The Man from U.N.C.L.E., it'd be Daniel Pemberton's fantastic score.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. clocks in at 116 minutes and is rated PG13 for "action violence, some suggestive content, and partial nudity."

It's a passable couple hours of brainless summer fun, but, to be honest, if your cinema is still playing Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation, you'd do better just to see that again.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. gets six.

Next on the docket, Mr. Holmes.

An elderly, failing Sherlock Holmes is haunted by a past blunder.

Dear Reader(s), every once in awhile, even *I* need a break from car chases and explosions, and this weekend my cinema was kind enough to accommodate with this well-regarded showcase for Ian McKellen.

Mr. Holmes is a pretty slow-moving vehicle; in the interest of making that not sound like a negative, we'll call it "deliberately paced." This movie is in no hurry to get anywhere, but that's not to say there's not plenty going on. A couple of old cases nag at the edges of Holmes' fading memory, and his declining health adds its own drama. McKellen and Laura Linney are expectedly great, but it's the youngster Milo Parker who steals the show, comfortably holding his own opposite his two decorated co-stars. It's a quietly intense film that will have no trouble holding your attention from start to finish.
Mr. Holmes runs 104 minutes and is rated PG for "thematic elements, some disturbing images, and incidental smoking."

A nice respite from shoot-em-up summer blockbusters, of a possible nine Weasleys, Mr. Holmes gets seven.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.








































At the height of the Cold War, a mysterious criminal organization plans to use nuclear weapons and technology to upset the fragile balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their hostilities and work together to stop the evildoers in their tracks. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a missing German scientist, whom they must find soon to prevent a global catastrophe.

Review:

The Man from U.N.C.L.E isn’t breaking any new ground and it borrows heavily from other better filmmakers but that doesn’t keep it from being a fun little romp.  Guy Ritchie’s film moves at a steady pace throwing 60’s fashion, good looking people and funny little quips throughout.  His trio of stars are all game and they all share great chemistry together.  Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are clearly having a ball indulging in their characters.  Alicia Vikander is a perfect as the female lead.  Her and Hammer have plenty of fun scenes together while Cavill is filling out his tailor made suits elsewhere.  It’s never deep or thought provoking and it probably overstays it’s welcome by about 15 minutes but that doesn’t keep it from being fun.

MOVIE REVIEW: EX MACHINA







































Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Review:

Alex Garland’s directorial debut is one of the smartest and sleekiest sci-fi films in recent memory.  Garland’s film is beautifully shot, delivering some stunning imagery throughout.  Thematically, it covers some well worn sci-fi tropes but it does it in a wonderfully engaging manner that rarely bores.  The actors and characters are all fascinating throughout with each actor delivering some multifaceted performances.  Oscar Isaac is quickly becoming a personal favorite of mine and he delivers as the reclusive tech genius.   Alicia Vikander is just mesmerizing as Ava.  The performance is measured and subtle, rarely overselling any moments but thoroughly engaging.  Domhnall Gleeson is solid but sadly he’s overshadowed by Vikander and Isaac.  The film is provocative and thoughtful until the final act where things devolve and starts to feel a bit too paint by the numbers.  Thankfully, Ex Machina is impressive enough to overcome that small misstep and make a big splash for Alex Garland.
